At the moment, I really wished i lived in London. ;) And by the way, I still LOVE the VILLAIN shirts! I have one ;)))Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2801886505610086313.post-88098759302825479192011-04-02T10:38:33.350-07:002011-04-02T10:38:33.350-07:00Yes, it's a wonderful production, isn't it...Yes, it's a wonderful production, isn't it, full of great ideas and performances. Glad you enjoyed it so much. It's back at the National Theatre in London soon, and I may well go back to see it again...Alex Ramonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13563545792136227647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2801886505610086313.post-66790007894596999372011-04-02T07:47:42.772-07:002011-04-02T07:47:42.772-07:00I thought that Nicholas hytner's Hamlet was ab...I thought that Nicholas hytner's Hamlet was absoulutely marvellous. I live in middle europe, and saw it in the NT live transmission and later travelled to Luxembourg for a weekend, to be able to see it again.
Rory Kinnear was incredible and presentet his lines with such clarity and honesty, as if he was speaking the text for the very first time. His "antic disposition" was portrayed superbly and made the whole audience burst out laughing. Hamlet is one of the most impulsive charcters in english literature, and often his actions don't make sense. With Rory Kinnear his actions were defined in a way, and they managed to make sense and be utterly weird at the same time-absoulutely excellent. Ruth Negga's Ophelia is the best one i have ever seen. She was not weak, but instead yelled back at hamlet in the nunnery scene. Over time however, one could clearly start to sense her guilt and she became more and more vunerable. She was excellent in her mad scenes, managing to be utterly crazy and very intelligent at the same time. I also loved her relationship with Laertes. clare Higins was a superb gertrude, not weak and guilty but firm and determined, never saying no to a glass (or five) of alcohol. Patrick Malhide was very cold, cruel and radiated power. It seemed like most people suspected he had killed his brother, but everyone was far to scared of being killed painfully on Claudius's orders to say anything. David calder's Polonius was a very strict no nonsense polotical operator abd not so foolish as usual, though still gathering many laughs from the audience. giles Terera lacked some confidence in his role as Horatio but stood out amongst the court with his warmth and loyalty.
It was a modern dress production, and so I didn't find Ophelia's stripping down to her bra in her mad scenes bad at all-she is supposed to show sexual innuedos and uncomfortable truths. I loved the villain shirts, they did seem a little childish, but were a way for Hamlet to vent his feelings withouth being arrsted (especially by making everyone wear them in the play scene).
All in all it was an absoulutely splendid production, which all hamlet lovers should see.
5 starsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2801886505610086313.post-28200196061331737982010-10-03T08:29:38.593-07:002010-10-03T08:29:38.593-07:00Ian - Great minds! That is so old school!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
