Music in Movies: 4 Favourite Scenes

1. Dans Paris (2006). A blast of Kim Wilde lures Romain Duris out of break-up depression.

2. Mean Streets (1973). The best opening to a movie ever?

3. Beau Travail (1999). The best ending to a movie ever?

4. 5x2 (2004). Classic Ozon: two couples and Paolo Conte's "Sparring Partner."

Have you seen the marvellous Beau Travail? New Denis, White Material, out on Friday.

  3. I have very fond memories of those scenes from Mean Streets and Beau Travail, and the other two are equally good. I'm totally wild for the Kim Wilde guy! And I didn't know that Claire Denis has a new film coming out soon.

My favorite movie/music scene of all time is Duckie (Jon Cryer) lip-synching to Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" in the middle of Pretty in Pink. I love, love, love that scene, and I miss, miss, miss John Hughes.

  4. I haven't seen PRETTY IN PINK for years; must revisit it sometime. A friend of mine is writing a PhD thesis on teen movies of the 80s, with a major focus on Hughes, of course.

Monsieur Duris was in THE BEAT THAT MY HEART SKIPPED and MOLIERE, amongst other things. DANS PARIS is adorable.

  5. Ah yes, I've seen him in The Beat That My Heart Skipped. I knew that he looked familiar! I much prefer him rolling around in bed in his boxer shorts while listening to a Kim Wilde record, however... ;)
