Claude Chabrol (1930-2010)

Triste nouvelle. Favourite Chabrol films? I vote La Femme infidèle (1969), Madame Bovary (1991) and, above all, the great Rendell adaptation, La Cérémonie (1995).

  1. I don't believe I've seen any Chabrol! Where shall I begin?

  2. La Cérémonie (1995) is my favourite, without a doubt. Some people rate Les Biches (1968) and Le Boucher (1970) highly, though I'm less keen on those. La Femme infidèle (1969) is excellent, and of the later work Madame Bovary (1991) is good and L'Enfer (1994) and Rien ne va plus (1997) aren't bad. Still need to see The Girl Cut in Two which came out a couple of years ago, and I believe he has one more film, with Depardieu, awaiting release.

  3. Ah yes, I have seen a Chabrol then (Girl Cut in Two), which was an intriguing tale.

I shall get 'round to those mentioned at some point - for the moment, I'm catching up on a little Rohmer.

Is French cinema a specialist subject for you then Alex?

  4. Not a specialist subject exactly, but I certainly have a big interest in French film. As evidenced by the amount of time I spend writing about it here…

I have to say that a little Rohmer … goes a long way for me!
