From the good (Radiator, Mr. Turner) to the bad (Men, Women, & Children, My Old Lady) to the ugly (Whiplash) - and not forgetting the outrageously AMAZING (The Duke of Burgundy) - below are links to my coverage of films at the 2014 London Film Festival.
Mr. Turner (dir. Mike Leigh)
Whiplash (dir. Damien Chazelle)
Radiator (dir. Tom Browne) /My Old Lady (dir. Israel Horovitz)
The Imitation Game (dir. Morten Tyldum) / X + Y (dir. Morgan Matthews)
The New Girlfriend (dir. Francois Ozon) / Something Must Break (dir. Ester Martin Bergsmark)
Men, Women & Children (dir. Jason Reitman) / Night Bus (dir. Simon Baker)
The Duke of Burgundy (dir. Peter Strickland)
French Riviera (dir. Andre Techine) / Dukhtar (dir. Afia Nathaniel)
While it probably isn't for everyone, I'm intrugued by The Duke of Burgundy. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
ReplyDeletePeter Strickland's previous film Berberian Sound Studio was pretty good as a story of alienation abroad etc, and not something you see everyday.
I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts on THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY, Chris. It certainly divided people at the LFF (there was pretty much a mass exodus at one point during the second screening I went to) but I thought it was amazing: a true one-off.
DeleteAwesome reviews, Alex! I'm glad that you found a good selection of films at the festival overall. I'll probably see Whiplash, although I have a feeling that I'll agree with you about it. And I anxiously await the release of Mr. Turner here in the states!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jason. Yes, overall it was a really strong year. I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts on WHIPLASH (I seem to be in a minority of one, so far). MR. T is out in the States on Dec 19th, I believe.
